We develop colour negative (C41), black and white negative, including Infra Red, and transparency (E6) film. Formats are 110, 35mm, 120, 220 and 5×4″.
For 110 (colour neg C41 or B/W) just order as per 35mm, and add a few words in the order notes at checkout to alert us it’s not 35mm!
Prices are the same for scanning and printing, except we can only do standard res scan, no high res for 110, creating jpgs of around 17mb (opened up size).
We use roller transport film processors for C41 (Noritsu) and B/W (Ilford) and a rotary (Jobo) for E6.
Colour chemicals are by Tetenal, and B/W from Ilford.
Yes, up to 2 stops push and 1 stop pull on C41 and E6, 3 stops either way on B/W.
No extra charge for B/W push /pull
There is an extra charge of £ 2.50 for C41 & E6 for any push/pull.
Yup, we embrace cross processing (E6 developed in C41 chemicals), and our Fuji scanner often gives amazing high contrast / high saturation results from cross pro negs – although this varies hugely from film to film, so please do your research first if you are new to cross processing and are considering it.
Yes, but these are done by hand so as not to contaminate our machines, so please indicate rolls very clearly if you send them to us. Please allow extra time (up to 10 working days), and an extra charge of 100% over normal dev cost.
But we do not develop Remjet coated film.
We scan on the Fuji SP-3000, an industry standard professional machine used for roll film scanning that offers excellent results with only minor tweaks usually needed.
Yes, just indicate on your order form and we’ll try to accommodate your needs scan wise. Or just leave blank for us to give you what we think are great looking scans.
We sure do, please click here

Xpan, sprocket rocket, other unusual formats or scanning the whole of the film can be done on our standard scanner, but by utilising the nearest 120 size neg holder to fit the length of the image.
For example, if you would like ALL of the neg, including all numbers, sprocket holes etc on a regular 35mm, we scan 2 frames together on a high res 120 6×9 format. You will then need to cut out the individual images to the crop you require. The upside of this is you get absolutely everything around the image. Downside is the files are a bit smaller than usual high res (we can only do this if you select high res option).
Please tell us in the order notes box at checkout about your film format, and any specific needs if you require this service.
However, another option if you require as much of the image as possible, and are not bothered about a tidy edge to your images is the ‘zoomed out’ option.
This pulls the scan lens out as far as it will go, to just include the film edge itself (not the sprocket holes or full rebate), and also a small amount of the rebate surrounding the image itself.
So you get all of the image, and some not necessarily perfect black lines surrounding. Good it you want all of the shot, not good if you don’t like image editing each frame as it can make the image look a little untidy.
This is no extra cost. Specify Zoomed Out in order notes at checkout.
We endeavour to upload scans back to you in 3 working days from receipt of the films. This my be slightly less or longer with quiet or busy times, although we will always notify you of any significant delays. Film will be posted back at set rates below, first class post. Or if you’re not fussed about receiving back the originals, tick the box when ordering, for us to dispose of your negs a month after your film was uploaded.
Up to 10 rolls: £ 2.50
10 -20 rolls: £ 4.50
Signed for up to 20 rolls: £ 4.75
DPD trackable courier – up to 1kg: £ 8.00
We have a whole page dedicated to that here
You’ll get a Dropbox link to your files. Make sure the email you provide links to your Dropbox to avoid delays.
Dropbox accounts are free to set up, and you don’t need to upgrade to the paid for versions if you regularly download your files from there and save to your back up drive, which of course we recommend you do with all your cloud files anyway.
If you like physical copies, no problem, we can put your scans onto a USB if you send in with your rolls, or provide scans to a DVD disc as well at no extra charge, instead of using Dropbox.
Although jpeg is a compression file format, and technically some pixels are lost upon opening and closing the file, we feel that for the size of file for our standard scans, that although they are perfectly adequate for most applications, and pretty decent sized prints, you’d be hard pressed to spot by eye any pixel loss before ‘pixellisation’ happens when zooming in anyway, due to the file size limit.
Go for the high res, and Tiff format if this issue concerns you.
We take environmental concerns seriously here at the Brighton Film Lab.
We recycle everything we can that is currently commercially possible.
Items that are taken away by our partners to be recycled include:
- All paper
- All cardboard
- All plastics
Single use cameras are taken away by a photo industry supplier for re-use or recycling.
All our photo chemicals are pumped though filtering equipment to remove heavy metals so they are ready for safe disposal.
For mailing film and prints out, we use recycled / recyclable materials where possible. For new packaging this means eco friendly envelopes and boxes if possible. This also may mean you receive your items in pre used packaging.
If these materials are in good shape we see this as a good use of resources, rather than using new material, however green it’s production.
